First off, it cost $3000... but it was totally worth it for being able to see without glasses... I figure if I spent $600 per year on glasses / contacs, then I will easily make back my money over 5 years...
I've seen the lasik videos before but watching the videos is a completely different experience than having the surgery done on your own eyes.
The weird part about the surgery is that I did not feel any pain at all... not even when they had to make the incision in my eye to make the flap. That was the worst part for me though because to make the incision they have to use a device that sucks onto your eye while you are laying down on the operating table. When it sucks onto your eye then everything goes black (they put an eye patch over your other eye).
They had to push down a little on the device to make it suck on properly and that was the uncomfortable part... not painful, but but just scary because my head was restrained by a foam retraint and I couldn't see anything, but I could feel the pressure on my face from them trying to get the device to attach properly. My body went into high anxiety mode and my heart started pounding and I felt like I just wanted to jump off of the table and run away... but that was for just maybe 45 seconds... Then they noticed my anxiety and started talking me through it.
They made the incision and turned on the lazer for 10 seconds and then did the same process to the other eye... This time attaching the cutting device was better because I knew it was only going to take about 45 seconds.
The whole surgery was done in less than 15 minutes.
They put medicine goup in my eyes and everything was blury. I went home and took a nap and when I woke up I could see distance perfectly, but my close up vision (0-4ft) was blury. I went to the DMV the next morning on my way to work to take the eye test and get the corrective lenses restriction off of my license. Over the next few days my close up vision went back to normal, it was probably 4 days before I was able to focus in on a computer screen.
I did have a little complication where some fluid accumulated under the flaps they made in my eyes and made little bumps, so the doctor had to get it out by pushing the fluid out with a sterile q-tip. That was a little wierd watching someone put a q-tip in my eye and holding it open. It wasn't painful, but my vision went blury again and eyes were sore after until the next day. After that there were no problems other than my eyes get really tired after a long day.
It's been a month and now I can't even remember what it was like to not be able to see. Sometimes I wake up and out of habit I start looking around for my glasses, only to realize that I can see perfectly.
Best $3000 I ever spent.
